Administrative Assistant Diploma Program

As the scope of technology has increased, the role of the administrative assistant has evolved. Today this position can play a key role in an organization, and can be responsible for a wide range of functions with various levels of responsibility. Jobs exist in all industries. For those who wish to move into specific areas of business operations, an administrative assistant’s role can often be a stepping stone for career development to such business functions as marketing, accounting, and human resources. Career opportunities also are possible in the general areas of office management and executive assistant to senior personnel.

The skills needed for success in this profession are many. The administrative assistant needs to understand and be able to competently use office technology. They need strong human relations and communication skills. Strong verbal and written skills in English are an asset. And the core skills of keyboarding, self organization, answering phones, making travel arrangements, etc, have to be applied professionally. Basically, people who do well in this job enjoy new challenges; can work with many people; can handle emergencies in a professional manner; are careful with details; and can follow through on work responsibilities.

This diploma program is 20 weeks long.

Program outline

Learning outcomes: That graduates have the knowledge and skills required to function as effective and productive administrative assistants in the modern workplace.

The Program moves from a basic to intermediate understanding and application of the skills learned through such courses as the Microsoft Office Package of Word, Power Point, Excel, Access, Publisher, Project Management, and Front Page. Other courses are Windows Operating System, the Internet and Email, Computer Problem Solving, Data and Document Management, Business English, Office Communication and Procedures.
